Ferdinand Herb and Garden Days is a popular annual event drawing gardeners and shoppers far and wide. Herbs, perennials, annuals, vintage garden accessories, antiques, home and garden decor make Ferdinand the place to be.

Friday, April 18

Special Garden Dinner and Seminar

Join horticulturist/humorist Birnie Jeffries, where he will bring an assortment of plants along for a show and tell presentation. He will also bring along any new introductions of plants for 2008 and have a great dialogue with the audience on whatever they want and need to know. Discount coupons and discounted plants will be available. This will be an educational presentation and exchange of ideas and the latest in landscape maintenance tricks of the trade. Birnie wants it to be colorful and entertaining and most of all — fun.

Making Hypertufa Containers

1:30 - 2:30 p.m.

A Make-it and Take-it session — Tufa is a naturally formed porous rock found around maineral springs of Europe and other parts of Europe. Hypertufa is a false rock, a semiporous material made from cement, sand and peat moss that can be formed into pots and other shapes for the garden. Hypertufa containers provide a defined planting area or unique container. Participants will be given the opportunity to prepare the material and create a container for use in their own garden. A handout, instructions, and all materials will be provided.

Presenter: Gayle Ann Jochum is a Purdue University Advanced Master Gardener

English Landscaping Styles Then and Now

Seventy slides of beautiful English gardens and landscapes just might inspire you to look at your garden a different way or try a new sort of design. See how people, geography, and historical events have influenced English landscapes from the 1600s to present day. You'll see an Elizabethan Knot Garden, "the original cottage garden", a white garden, a "hot" garden, orangeries, canal gardens and more.

Gourd Basics

12-12:50 p.m.

This program gives an overall basic plan of action for anyone interested in gourds. It will cover instructions on raising gourds from seeds, preparation of gourds prior to crafting including some safety measures, and tips on crafting. There will be gourd seedlings for sell.

Presenter: Debbie Goedde from Goedde Gourd Gardens. Debbie's specialty is growing gourds and gourd crafting, garden topics especially native plants and butterflies.

Gourd necklaceGourd Necklace Using Beads and Japanese Handmade Paper

1-2:30 p.m.

We will be creating gourd necklaces using gourds which are clean and ready for crafting. Paint is an option to be applied before applying Japanese handmade paper and beads. I will provide a variety of japanese handmade paper, beads, and paint so that each participant leaves with a unique, colorful patterned necklace. The class is designed  to be fun, easy for the novice or advanced crafter, and to be completed in approximately one-and-a-half hours. 

Presenter: Debbie Goedde from Goedde Gourd Gardens. Debbies specialty is handcrafting gourds, raising gourds, garden related topics.

  • Workshop is limited to 12 participants
